Aalto University becomes collaboration partner in the DARIAH network of digital arts and humanities
In the Digital Research Infrastructure for Arts and Humanities, it is possible to influence through working groups.
Aalto University is the first university in Finland to join the EU’s DARIAH network, a large European infrastructure project in digital arts and humanities. The DARIAH network aims at sharing resources, tools and materials, and to achieve this goal, collaboration partners can present and make their special expertise available in the extensive network of digital arts and humanities experts.
‘Aalto University will take part in the DARIAH network at least through ontologies and linked open data services, and also through tools and applications of data analysis, which the Department of Computer Science develops. I hope that all researchers in different parts of Aalto University working on digital humanities and data analysis will find opportunities to network with new partners in the DARIAH network,’ says Eero Hyvönen, Professor at the Department of Computer Sciences and the director of the recently founded HELDIG centre, which focuses on digital humanities.
In the development of ontology and data services, a shared infrastructure may simplify the process of building the services.
‘The DARIAH network enables the development of new partnerships that involve multidisciplinary research in human sciences, and may be realised, for example, as joint EU applications by the different experts in the network. The aim in Finland is also to include the DARIAH network in the research infrastructure programme of the Academy of Finland later on, adds Hyvönen.
The DARIAH network currently has 17 member states and 12 collaboration partners. NTNU, the largest university in Norway, joined the network at the same time with Aalto University. One Swedish and three British universities, and five universities and one research centre from Switzerland were already members of the network.
