VR is currently being hyped as being “the next big thing.” Countless companies are pouring millions of dollars to develop their own R&D projects. Facebook, Google, Sony, HTC/Valve, Microsoft, Samsung and Nokia are only a few of the bigger names.
VR is a very, very new medium. Because of this fact we have very few conventions to follow. We need to rethink everything. We don’t know how to properly guide viewers’ attention if they can look around freely wherever they want? And what are our visual storytelling tools now?
What we do know is that it completely changes how viewers relate to the space and the people they see “on screen”. We seem to feel more “present” than when watching a conventional movie.
Shooting a film in 360° is not a trivial task: it requires a completely new workflow and there are no easily accessible tools available yet. But it does allow us to shape a new artistic language and to experiment with basic interactivity in movies. It is not yet clear if VR will be successful for movies – but if it is, it will imply major changes. Filmmakers have the opportunity of shaping this future right now.
This is why we brought 20 film students together to create films for this new medium: how to shoot 360° video that surrounds viewer completely and how to deal with basic interactivity in films.The resulting short films which have been shot & edited during our 2 week process will be screened on Friday 16th October.
